Manusmṛti
The Manusmṛti, also called the Mānava Dharmaśāstra, is the best-known of the dharmaśāstras. Presented as Manu's teaching through the sage Bhṛgu, its twelve chapters range from creation and the stages of life to rites, kingship, law, duties of the social orders, penance and karma. It deeply influenced later Indian law and thought. Its social prescriptions, especially on caste and women, are strongly debated today. This course reads the text in its historical setting, examining both its ideas of dharma and the criticisms it faces.
