Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta
Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta
Composed by Brahmagupta in 628 CE, the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta is a landmark of both astronomy and mathematics. Alongside methods for computing planetary positions and eclipses, it sets out explicit rules for arithmetic with zero and negative numbers, solutions of quadratic equations, and celebrated results in geometry such as the area of a cyclic quadrilateral. Its influence reached the Islamic world through Arabic translation. Across four volumes, this course reads the text as genuine science, verse by verse, in its historical context.
