Garuḍa Purāṇa

The Garuḍa Purāṇa is framed as Viṣṇu's teaching to his eagle mount, Garuḍa. Its first part covers worship, astrology, medicine, gemology and ethics, while its second part, the Preta-khaṇḍa, describes what happens after death: the soul's journey, the results of karma, funeral rites and śrāddha. Because this section is traditionally recited during mourning in many Hindu homes, it is both widely known and often misunderstood. This course reads it carefully, in its own context and on its own terms.
