About this course

Kena Upaniṣad

The Kena Upaniṣad belongs to the Sāmaveda and opens with a striking question: “By whom” is the mind directed, and by whom do speech, eye and ear function? In four short sections it points to Brahman as the ear of the ear and the mind of the mind, known not as an object but as the very ground of knowing. A memorable story of the gods, a mysterious yakṣa and Umā Haimavatī makes the teaching vivid. Studied with Ādi Śaṅkarācārya's commentary, it is an ideal first Upaniṣad.

What you will learn
