Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa
The Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa is generally counted among the older purāṇas. The sage Jaimini brings his questions about the Mahābhārata to Mārkaṇḍeya, who directs him to four wise birds, and from this frame unfold stories such as that of King Hariścandra and the queen Madālasā's teaching to her son. Its best-known part is the Devī Māhātmya, also called the Durgā Saptaśatī or Caṇḍī, which celebrates the Goddess's victories over the asuras and remains central to Śākta worship.
