About this course

Padma Purāṇa

The Padma Purāṇa is one of the largest purāṇas, named after the lotus from which Brahmā arises at creation. It survives in more than one recension, arranged in khaṇḍas covering creation, the earth, the heavens, the netherworlds and a final section. Alongside cosmology it gathers a wealth of tīrtha-māhātmyas, vratas such as Ekādaśī, Vaiṣṇava devotion and the Gītā-māhātmya, which praises each chapter of the Bhagavad Gītā. Studying it opens up the world of pilgrimage, observance and devotional storytelling.

What you will learn

  • The khaṇḍas of the Padma Purāṇa and its recensions
