Research report on Purāṇas

The Purāṇas are a vast body of Sanskrit texts that preserve the myths, genealogies, cosmology, rituals and sacred geography of Hindu tradition. This course surveys the genre as a whole: the traditional five marks of a purāṇa, the lists of eighteen mahāpurāṇas and the upapurāṇas, the role of the sūta storytellers, and how these texts were transmitted, expanded and revised over many centuries. It also introduces the scholarly debates about their dates and the honest uncertainties that remain.

What you will learn

  • The pañcalakṣaṇa: the five traditional marks of a purāṇa
  • The eighteen mahāpurāṇas, upapurāṇas and their classifications
  • How scholars approach dating, recensions and authorship
