About this course

Rāmāyaṇa (all kāṇḍas)

Vālmīki's Rāmāyaṇa is honoured as the ādi-kāvya, the first poem of Sanskrit literature. In seven kāṇḍas it tells the life of Śrī Rāma: his youth, exile to the forest, the abduction of Sītā by Rāvaṇa, the alliance with Hanumān and the vānaras, the war in Laṅkā and the return to Ayodhyā. Scholars widely regard the first and last kāṇḍas as later layers. Reading it in full reveals its ideals of dharma, its human struggles and its great poetry.

What you will learn

  • The story and structure of all seven kāṇḍas
  • Dharma, duty and loyalty through Rāma, Sītā and Hanumān
