About this course

Samaveda

The Sāmaveda is the Veda of song. Most of its verses are drawn from the Ṛgveda, but here they are set to melody (sāman) and sung by the udgātṛ priest during the yajña. The text is arranged in two main parts, the Pūrvārcika and the Uttarārcika, with separate song-books (gāna) preserving the melodies. Indian tradition has long honoured it as a root of sacred music. Studying it in the lineage of Maharṣi Jaimini, you will explore how word, metre and sound unite in worship.

What you will learn

  • How Ṛgvedic verses became chanted sāmans
  • The structure of Pūrvārcika, Uttarārcika and the gānas
