Skanda Purāṇa
The Skanda Purāṇa, named after Śiva's son Skanda (Kārttikeya), is the largest of all the purāṇas. Rather than a single story, it is a vast collection that grew over many centuries and survives in different arrangements, most famously in khaṇḍas devoted to regions and sacred sites such as Kāśī, Avantī and Prabhāsa. Its tīrtha-māhātmyas describe the legends, rituals and merits of countless places of pilgrimage, making it a guide to India's sacred geography.
