About this course

Vāmana Purāṇa

The Vāmana Purāṇa centres on Viṣṇu's dwarf avatāra, who asks the generous asura king Bali for three steps of land and then spans the worlds. Narrated largely by the sage Pulastya to Nārada, it also contains much Śaiva material, stories of the Goddess, and a detailed account of the sacred sites of Kurukṣetra and the Sarasvatī region. Studying it reveals how a single purāṇa can hold Vaiṣṇava, Śaiva and Śākta traditions together.

What you will learn

  • The story of Vāmana and Bali and its meanings
  • Kurukṣetra and the sacred Sarasvatī region
  • How Vaiṣṇava, Śaiva and Śākta stories coexist
