Viṣṇu Purāṇa

The Viṣṇu Purāṇa is often regarded as one of the most coherent and classically shaped of the purāṇas. In six books (aṃśas), the sage Parāśara answers his disciple Maitreya on the creation of the world, the geography of the earth, the ages of Manu, the royal dynasties and the deeds of Viṣṇu, ending with the life of Kṛṣṇa and the dissolution of the cosmos. It is an ideal entry point into how a purāṇa is built and why Viṣṇu is honoured as the sustainer.
