About this course

Kūrma Purāṇa

The Kūrma Purāṇa is narrated by Viṣṇu in his tortoise avatāra, who supported Mount Mandara during the churning of the ocean. Though Vaiṣṇava in frame, much of it honours Śiva, and it is notable for presenting Viṣṇu and Śiva as one. It covers creation, cosmology, dynasties and dharma, and its later part contains the Īśvara Gītā, a philosophical dialogue in which Śiva teaches the sages about the Self, yoga and devotion, echoing the Bhagavad Gītā.
