About this course

Rāmacaritamānasa

The Rāmacaritamānasa, 'the lake of Rāma's deeds', was composed by Gosvāmī Tulsīdās in Awadhi, a form of Hindi, in the sixteenth century. Written mainly in caupāī verses punctuated by dohās, it retells the Rāma story in seven kāṇḍas through nested dialogues, including Śiva speaking to Pārvatī and Kākabhuśuṇḍi to Garuḍa. Deeply devotional, it is recited daily in countless homes and staged as Rāmlīlā across North India. Studying it opens a living tradition of Rāma bhakti.

What you will learn

  • The seven kāṇḍas and their nested dialogue frames
  • Tulsīdās's language, metres and devotional vision
  • How the Mānasa shapes recitation and Rāmlīlā today
